FuturePlay celebrates, explores and showcases cutting-edge creative content and ideas at the intersection of art and technology. The festival launched in 2016 as part of the largest arts festival in the world, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
The 2017 edition ran for 24 days and featured a range of events and shows in venues across Edinburgh. The festival hub, situated on George Street in the New Town, featured FuturePlay venues in geodesic domes and shipping containers.
The VR Studio showcased a range of content including 360° and documentary films, animations, interactive games and multi-sensory experiences. The Immersive Gallery, powered by Google Tilt Brush, gave attendees the opportunity to explore large-scale virtual artworks created by professional artists or create their own.
Indie Games & Interactive Tech
The Tech Zone provided an interactive playground for the whole family with indie games and hands-on tech such as new musical instruments and augmented reality (AR). A converted underground car park was host to the FuturePlay Arcade Party, a one night event featuring dozens of retro video games, drinks and DJs.
Performances & Sessions
In collaboration with Assembly Festival, FuturePlay presented a season of digitally inspired theatre pieces. The shows were complemented by FuturePlay Sessions, a series of talks and debates which provided an outlet for artists and academics to talk about the themes, topics and technologies in their work.
Talks & Debates
The FuturePlay Exchange, a one-day industry symposium, brought together creative professionals and experts from the worlds of gaming, theatre, tech, arts organisations and venues to share, debate and connect. Sessions ranged from debates, presentations, case studies, interactive demos, and roundtable discussions.
